The only sexually transmitted disease that wet prep is effective at diagnosing is trichamoniasis. The yeast, and the bacteria that causes bacterial vaginosis, live in the vagina all the time, though usually in small numbers. Sometimes, circumstances arise that lead to the overgrowth of either the yeast or the bacteria. This can lead to itching, discharge, oder, cervicitis, etc.
