Androgen/Adrenal Gland over stimulation by Herbal ProductsFrom: Barbara (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sun, 4 Oct 1998 19:38:42 -0500 (CDT)
I had a complete hysterotomy about 2 years ago. My liver could not disseminate oral estrogen, so I tried the patch, (Climara 1.0 and 0.5). I felt great but was huge. About ten months ago I tried using Ogen and a herbal weightloss product which included ephedrine. Eight months ago during my last checkup, I requested my estrogen level be checked as I began experiencing anxiety/depression attacks, hot flashes, and insomina. My estrogen level was supposedly OK, and my Dr. prescribed Prozac which helped. Around April, I began experiencing a continual bout of acne (I'm 46) and excessive hair growth on my face and weight gain. Through Medline research, I discovered elevated androgens caused acne, and weight gain. I know ephedrine stimulates the adrenals and am suspect that I'm overproducing testosterone. Ogen, an estrone (E1), replacement probably has never been effective and I've probably been able to maintain some control through the use of prozac. I've tried to discontinue Prozac numerous times but have such severe mood swings, and hot flashes I thought I must have an imbalance and really require it. I wonder if I go back to a transdermal patch if I would still need the Prozac and if I should have a blood workup done by another OB-GYN who specializes in hormone therapy?
