Becoming pregnant following use of BCP

My husband and I have recently decided to have a baby. My family doctor told us to wait three months before trying to conceive. Why is this. I have read that the only reason to wait is so that the pregnancy can be accurately dated. Is there a danger to the fetus if I were to become pregnant prior to the three month waiting period my GP has requested? If there are dangers to the fetus, what are they and where could I look for more information? Thanks.
