Scheduling annual exam

This isn't a medical question, but I would appreciate some insight on the best way to resolve a situation with my gyn's office. This is a general "is this the way doctor's offices are supposed to be run" kind of question.

In mid-august I scheduled an appointment for my annual exam. The first available appt was today (9/8), which I took. I thought it was strange that the office had not called to confirm my appointment, but thought the holiday weekend had probably messed things up. Just to be safe, I called this morning to confirm my appointment. I was pretty upset to find out that they had no record of my appointment for today or any other day. The best they could do was schedule me another appointment on Oct. 2nd.

It was bad enough that they lost my appointment, but I am even more perturbed that they seemed to make no effort to accommodate me other than to offer a new appointment like they would if I was just calling today. Is this standard practice in doctor's offices? Is it common to "lose" appointments? I understand that they could not get me in today, and I would have been okay with an appointment later this week or early next week.

I certainly understand that mistakes happen. But I also expect people to make some effort to rectify their mistakes. The admin casually mentioned that they have a new computer system that may have "kicked out" the appoinment. However, it seems like their assumption is that I never really had an appointment. Is it a regular occurrence that patients claim to have appointments that never existed?

I'll admit that I was less than courteous to the admin on the phone, and even mentioned that I might find another office (I was pretty mad by that time). Does anyone have any recommendations on how I might work with the office to negotiate an earlier appointment? Am I being reasonable to expect some sort of compromise on their part? I am anxious to get in because my husband and I would like to have another baby, and I was hoping to have this done before I got pregnant to make sure there were no problems.

Also, is it really necessary to see an ob/gyn for an annual exam? I checked with my family practitioner's office and she can see me tomorrow. Is there any reason that a good FP can't provide this kind of care? Is there any significant difference between a pre-pregnancy visit and a regular annual exam?

Should I just see the FP this week and be done with it, or is it probably worth the effort to try to negotiate with my gyn's office (or just take the 10/2 appointment)? I would probably have to find a new ob/gyn for a pregnancy anyway since my current doctor doesn't practice at a hospital near my home.

Thanks for any suggestions (and for letting me vent a little)!

Andrea
