I read recently (sorry, I can't remember where) that sporty women often have long difficult labours not because their muscles or their cervix is 'hard' and therefore resistant to dilating, but because as athletes they are used to being in full control of their bodies and their physical performance and consequently often fight the effect of the contractions and are unable to let their bodies really surrender to its instincts and to do its own thing, which, assuming the baby is in the correct position, the mother is healthy, etc. is what is required for a short, successful labour.
