HCG levels and possible implications

At 4 weeks and 2 days my HCG levels were 10,500. They had exactly tripled (298%) from my first beta HCG test. I thought that was good news. This weekend I picked up "What to Expect When You're Expecting" and there was a reference in the book that higher than normal HCG levels could indicate Downs. Since I have had previous losses, I am concerned. Is my higher than normal increase (Isn't normal 66%-100% increase over 48 hours?) something to be concerned about? Could the higher increase be an indicator of twins? I do have a sonogram on Friday to look for the heartbeat (I am now at 8 weeks), but I was hoping to get some input before then. Thank you very much for your help and answers!
