Induction vs. VBAC - Thanks Dr. Ind, etc.From: Lisa (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 28 Aug 1998 22:47:59 -0500 (CDT)
First, thanks everyone for all your input. Don't worry Dr Ind, I'm not looking for any guarantees, just opinions. (I appreciate the forum here so much because of the variety of opinions it provides. That said, I'm not holding anyone to their opinion.) I realize that a repeat C is always possible. Even with my dr's estimated success rate of 80%, that's still a 1 in 5 chance of it not happening. I realized earlier in my pregnancy that I had not dealt with the possibility, so I think I've worked that out. However, I've been told a positive attitude is a key step towards a successful VBAC and it is what I am really hoping for. So, I try to be both realistic and optimistic, which is what I think my doctor is trying to do. Sometimes I think he is a little overconcerned about her size, but I realize that's because he is hoping to avoid a second section as well. He did a quick scan the other week and pointed out that my placenta is in a good place (posterior) for a C, so I know he's not discounting the possibility, either. As he said, he wants me to have the birth that I want, but his first priority is a healthy baby. Have to say I agree 100% there. I also realize what a hot topic mobility during labor is. (I appreciate both your inputs on this, Suzanne and Dr Ind.) I haven't seen so much controversy since ACOG announced that they're going to revise their VBAC guidelines to be more cautious. Again, I know there's no guarantee that walking will help. (Nor do I think I'll be wanting to parade around the hospital corridors up until the pushing phase.) However, I feel anything I can *safely* do that *might* increase my chances is something I want to try. Unfortunately, walking epidurals and pudental blocks are not offered by my hospital. Knowing my own pain tolerance, I would be surprised if I made it without any epidural. My aim is to put it off as long as possible, though. If that means I make it without one, that's great, I'm just not holding that myself to that. Mary - Thanks for sharing your experience. Mary & Elizabeth - I have read ALOT during this pregnancy (including the Sears' Birth Book - I liked it, too). I also took the VBAC course offered by my hospital, and found that extremely valuable. I agree that an informed mom is a happier mom, no matter what the outcome. As of my exam today, the baby's completely engaged and I'm 50% effaced and 1.5 cm dilated, so hopefully induction will be a moot point. At this point, I'm more than willing to wait it out. The dr isn't pushing it, as he's not sure that whether the baby weighs 7 lbs or 8 lbs will make a difference. He said the only way to know if she'll fit is to try. I'm game if he is! Again, thanks for all your insight. I'll let you all know how it turns out. I've found this forum to be so helpful during my pregnancy, I feel I owe you all!
