abnormal periods for 6 months

I am 43 years old and had regular periods until about 6 months ago. After having break-though bleeding, cramping and spotting, and nausea 10 days or so before my period for 2 cycles , an ultrasound showed uterine lining of 19mm. Two weeks later ultrasound with fluid showed lining at 7mm. Endometrial biopsy taken at that time showed no hyperplasia or cancer. Diagnosis was hormonal problems.

Problems continue or are getting worse. I have lots of cramping and spotting before and after my periods, usually brownish light spotting, and cramping and nausea mid-cycle. On the 14th day (best guess) of my cycle 2 months ago we tried progesterone (prometrium 200mg) for 10 days. On the 6 day I started spotting which continued for 6 days until my period and had spotting 6 days after. 8 days later very light spotting started again (following a week or so of nausea and cramping. After a 5 day period, I am now in 4th day of spotting again. Progesterone to be taken every other month. My periods have not been overly heavy and are pretty regularly spaced.

Sorry about all the detail but I thought it might be needed to answer the following questions:

is it possible that the biopsy was false negative? should I have another? different tests?

if the problems are hormonal why are corrective hormones making the problems worse or not improving them?

what else should I do? push for more tests? see other physicians? ask more questions?

Please help; this is scary.
