I have not had any periods for this 8 >year period It is unusual to not have any bleeding at all while taking the birth control pills, but some women develop a very thin uterine lining that simply does not lead to bleeding while on the pill. However, now that you have stopped the pill, you should see some bleeding within a few months. If not, you need an evaluation for "secondary amenorrhea" since this could represent a medical problem. It would also make it extremely difficult to become pregnant. Evaluation for this usually consists of a thyroid and prolactin level, and, on occasion, an FSH (menopause "hormone") level. Sometimes other tests are necessary as well. This is something you should sit down and talk about with your doctor. Good luck with everything, and with getting pregnant.
