Rubella ImmunityFrom: Angela (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 17 Aug 1998 09:24:56 -0500 (CDT)
I recently had a pre-conception visit to check progesterone levels 7 dpo (I have PCOS but have been ovulating regularly (knock on wood) since completing a 44 week study of an insuln-sensitizing agent), varicella and rubella titers. My progesterone levels indicated ovulation, but weren't great, but that's another sujbect entirely. More puzzling was my negative titer for rubella. I know that I have been immnunized at least twice, and possibly even three times. I was born in 1973, so that puts me way outside the years where the vaccine was supposedly less effective (acccording to what I have read). I know that rubella is a live vaccine and therefore lasting immunity is almost guaranteed. So, why am I not immune? Do some people just not mount a response to the rubella vaccine? Is there any point to having a 3rd (possibly 4th) immunization? Is it possible that the lab uses one of the less sensitive assays? (I know that there are several and they vary considerably in their sensitivity). Of course, my varicella titer was positive since I actually _had_ chickenpox. Thanks for your comments.
