Pain and discomfort of uterine fibroids -- what helps?From: anna (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 11 Aug 1998 15:10:01 -0500 (CDT)
I’m a 35 year old woman, 2 children, tubiligation after the second child. About a year ago, my periods became very irregular, heavy bleeding, horrible cramping. After trying birth control pills, my ob/gyn recommended a sonogram. A uterine polyp was discovered, which we went after twice – first with a D&C, then using a scope. The last surgery was May 1st. The bleeding problem then stopped entirely. The problem is that there also appear to be various fibroids in the uterine wall, and what I experience daily now is back pain, leg pain, and extremely uncomfortable pressure on my rectum – I either feel as if I have to ‘go,’ or experience constipation and gas retention because I feel ‘blocked.’ Also, about a month after surgery, my husband and I noticed that cervix was significantly lower than it had been – not protruding, but lower nonetheless. I saw my doctor about this, and since I was still not interested in additional surgical options, he suggested I try Keegel exercises. I’m doing them, but they don’t seem to be buying me anything. So what’s my question? I feel like crap and am anxious to know if there are alternatives to a hysterectomy. Despite my tubal, I am recently remarried and haven’t abandoned the idea of a 3rd child. I have been attempting to combat the side-effects of this by getting enough sleep, eating very well, exercising … but it just isn’t doing the trick. I’d appreciate any help the medical staff or other readers might provide.
