16w pg, passing clots, intern says it's the cervix??From: Chris (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 4 Aug 1998 11:10:16 -0500 (CDT)
Hi! I'm 16 weeks pregnant for the first successful time and have bled 7 times during this pregnancy, the last 3 times being in the last two weeks. My regular doctor, on his most recent ultrasound, saw a low-lying placenta which was "touching" the cervical os and causing the bleeding. He told me to relax and if I bled again to call him (but he didn't mention taking me off work and I didn't ask). This morning I started bleeding again and passed some 1.5 cm, tough clots (like the texture of tissue), which of course frightened me and made me think my placenta was falling apart! I called my doctor but he's on vacation, so I went to the hospital where I'm registered and saw an OB intern. He said I had a "very slight inflammation" of the cervix but that it was well closed. He performed a short ultrasound and, when I saw the screen, I easily recognized my placenta and thought it was actually *lower* than before. The intern said it was low but that the bleeding was from my cervix. He said the slight inflammation caused this bleeding. Nonetheless he put me on bedrest until my next appointment with my regular doctor (in one week). I find it hard to believe that it was the cervix bleeding so thick with tough clots. Is this reasonable? Is it normal that I've bled 7 times now and was casually asked if I'd like some time off work? I can't wait to see my regular doctor in a week.
-- Sincerely, Chris
