What does a stage classification of endometriosis mean?

From: Caroline (anonymous@obgyn.net)

I am 33. Recently, a uterine fibriod and ovarian cysts were found via ultrasound. The ovarian cyst on my right looked complex. I subsequently had other tests where my doctors suspected either cancer or endometriosis. I then had an exploratory laparotomy where they removed my right ovary and fallopian tube. They confirmed that I had endometriosis and classified it as stage 4.

What do these stages mean and what are the criteria for the classification?

Thanks for the information.
