While giving a lecture on contraception to a group of medical students, I was amazed that when I went round the room of relatively street wise young men and women, they could only name 5 forms of contraception. The final list was considerably larger. Below is the final list. I would be interested to here from women who find this a complete revelation that there are so many different forms. Please note that not all these methods are available world wide and that many are not very effective.

BARRIER METHODS Male condom Female condom Diaphragm Cervical cap (how many thought the cap and diaphragm were the same?) Dumas Vimule Sponge Double Dutch (Cap and condom)

SPERMICIDES (not to be used for contraception on their own) Nonoxinal-9 Octoxinol

INTRAUTERINE DEVICES Coil (numerous types) Intrauterine system Intrauterine implants

SYSTEMICAL HORMONAL CONTRACEPTION Combined oral contraceptive pill (the pill) Progesterone only pill (the minipill) Depot progesterone injections Progesterone implants (Norplant)

NATURAL Natural family planning methods (numerous parts) Persona (in UK)

STERILISATION Male Female

POSTCOITAL Estrogens & Progesterones (Yuzpe's regiem, morning after pill) Progesterones only Estrogens only Coil Others (RU486)

FUTURE Vaccines Male pill
