late pill or missed pill?

Where do you draw the line between taking a BCP late and missing a pill?

I normally take my pill in the morning around 8AM. If I remember to take it later that same day, have I "missed" a pill and need to follow the directions for missed pills and consider backup methods? What if I don't remember until dinner or bedtime?

I guess what I am looking for is something to the effect of "if you take your pill more than ___ hours later than usual, the effectiveness may be compromised".

Can anyone fill in the blank? Is this rule any different for the very first pill in the pack?
