Re: Large Uterine Fibroid & Limb Movement disordersFrom: Robinson (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 22 Jul 1998 16:07:32 -0500 (CDT)
This message is for Dr. Bradley in reference to uterine fibroids and limb movement/pain. I have recently been diagnosed with uternine fibroid tumors and am contemplating surgery. The fibriods range in size from 3 centimeters to 1-1/2 centimeters. There are a total of six fibroids. I was previously an avid runner, running approximately 5 miles per day, 4-5 days a week. I have, over the past 3-4 years experienced a number of things that I now wonder if they are associated with to the fibroids. 1) When running, I occasionally experienced foot and leg numbness. (Left leg and foot). 2) When rising in the morning, my left foot is usually numb. 3) Extreme exhaustion in the mornings. I typically rise at 5:00 am (without the aid of an alarm clock) and always have energy. I am now rising on average 7:30-8:00 am. I don't drink alcohol or indulge in drugs of any sort. In addition, I have never taken any form birth control. 4) Abdominal pain, similar to menstral cramps throughout the month 5) Occasional sharp pains in my left leg, even when lying down 6) Frequent urination, 7) A constant feeling of fullness My doctors' nurse indicated that these were typical symptoms associated with fibroid tumors. She indicated that having tumors of this size are similar to being 12 weeks pregnant and the size of tumors take on the same role of a fetus and press on nerves, possibly causing the numbness. I realize that most of these symptoms may very well be associated with the tumors. What concerns me is the numbness. In addition, I am considering a myomectomy and am wondering if you can tell me what to expect after the surgery. 1) What is the typical recovery time? 2) Are you typically able to walk after being released from the hospital? 3) Are there typical dietary changes to consider? 4) Are there any products that aid in healing the wound? 5) Are there any products that I my use that will heal the wound in such a way that it is almost undetectable? 6) How soon after the surgery can one expect to resume exercise (i.e. running)? 7) What pain killers are standard for this type of surgery? 8) Are there any questions that I should be posing to the anesthesiologist? 9) What should I expect from my doctor in terms of aftercare? 10) What are a patient's rights in relation to services that they absolutely do not want performed while they are under the scope? By this, I am referring to the fact that I do not want my uterus removed. I am in my childbearing years and currently have no children, but plan to. Under no circumstances am I giving my persmission for my uterus to be removed. What should I do presurgery to ensure that this does not happen, regardless of the surgical findings? I have presented these same questions to my doctor, but would like to here what your answers are Thank you in advance for your assistance and time and thank you for providing this services. It's a wonderful tool.
