Amenorrhea

I am 21 years old and have had relatively normal periods since age 12. I was diagnosed with amenorrhea a few months ago and am now taking birth control pills. My doctor gave me no real reason for this occuring, however, thought weight gain may be a contributing factor. I gained between 20-30 lbs over 6-8 months time. I am now losing the weight, but still have no periods. My weight is relatively normal for my height. Will my cycle ever return to normal and will I always have to take birth control pills to induce a period? How long does amenorrhea usually last?
