Post-pregnancy weight problemsFrom: AMD (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 16 Jul 1998 18:57:23 -0500 (CDT)
I am sure you doctors have heard this a million times, but what happens to your body when you're pregnant that seems to lead to permanent weight problems for many women? Before my pregnancy 4 years ago, I had little trouble maintaining my weight within a 5 -10 pound range. I could eat whatever I wanted and not gain any significant amount of weight. And if I made some effort to watch my diet, I could lose 5 -10 pounds with minimal difficulty. I gained too much weight while I was pregnant, and then I lost almost nothing at delivery (< 10 pounds with a 7 pound baby). I lost the weight and got down to within 5 # of my starting weight. BUt when I resumed the same eating pattern that had maintained my weight pre-pregnancy, I gained back 20# in a year. I lost this weight again, and then gained 25# in < 6 months. I have started trying to lose this weight again, but the prospect of spending the rest of my life counting every bite of food I put in my mouth is discouraging. I know the speech -- permanent lifestyle change is the only way to maintain permanent weight loss. But what has happened to my body so that the lifestyle I had before pregnancy does not work after pregnancy? Should I expect this problem to get worse with each pregnancy? I know so many women that have this same fundamental problem. In fact, I know very few women who were able to easily return to their prepregnancy weight and maintain it the same way they had maintained that weight before. I'm just curious if there is some physiological change that can lead to trouble with weight management? Thanks, Andrea
