VIN stands for "Vulvar Intra-epithelial Neoplasia" .This is a potential precursor for invasive vulvar cancer, and in the vast majority of cases is related to one of several specific types of wart viruses. Thus in a sense,it might be the consequence of a sexually transmitted disease! It is rare to find it occuring in non-smokers. The abnormal cells develop in the most superficial layers of the skin, thus a laser can very precisely destroy the involved layers without damaging the deeper structures. Regeneration can take days or a few weeks. Dr.B
