Re: vaginal painFrom: Robert Radnich, MD (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sun, 12 Jul 1998 06:34:35 -0500 (CDT)
Angela, I am sure that your cousin is frustrated. Burning vulva syndrome or Vulvodynia is a difficult condition. Vestibulitis is a variant of this condition in which there is an inflammation of the glands around the vestibule (opening of the vagina). It is usually associated with HPV. It has been treated with varying success with Interferon injections and surgical removal of this tissue. More commonly, the cause of vulvodynia is not known. Some people feel it is related to an excess of oxylates in the diet. Again, many treatments and dietary modifications have been tried. The most common treatment is a course of the tri-cyclic antidepressants such as Elavil. I would recommend an evaluation at your local medical school GYN Dept. Hopefully there will be someone there who is well versed and interested in this devistating condition.
