Janet: A very large fibroid can certainly cause enough pressure on the bladder to produce urinary frequency. It may also aggravate stress incontinence. If a pre-operative work-up excludes stress incontinence ( and =/or sphincter dysfunction) bladder surgery at this time could be ill-advised. Bladder surgery for stress incontinence may induce bladder instability.....frequency, marked urgency, getting up at night and even urgency incontinence. Bladder "surgery'" will only correct some types of incontinence, and can aggravate others. Reimbursement is provided if the bladder surgery is performed in conjunction with the hysterectomy. One should perform bladder surgery only if the problem indicates a likely improvement in control if such surgery is carried out.
