There are so-called "extreme low dose" pills such as the LoEstrin 1/20 that I have used to combat perimenopausal mennorrhagia with great success. I would prefer not to use any conjugated estrogens in smokers, diabetics, and patients with a history of deep vein thrombosis. There is always the potential for side effects with any medication, not least hormonal contraceptives. Still, the lower dose of the progesterone usually translates into fewer side effects than higher dose pills.
