Estimation of gestational ageFrom: AMD (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 9 Jul 1998 12:21:16 -0500 (CDT)
There is a news story in my area about a doctor who started to perform an abortion on a woman and ended up delivering a 6+ pound 37-week baby. The clinic involved claims that the ultrasound indicated that the pregnancy was 23 weeks gestation. I realize that ultrasound is not a precise science, but always assumed they can usually get it within a couple of weeks of the actual age. How is it possible to misjudge gestation by this much? Is the technology really that limited, or is the skill of the sonographer a more likely source of error? This note is not intended to incite peoples strong feelings about abortion, but is more to clarify the abilities and limitations of ultrasound. US is used so frequently in normal OB care to establish gestational age that it's hard for a non-medical person to understand how such a drastic error could happen. Andrea P.S. Newspaper reports indicate the baby survived with a skull fracture and deep lacerations and is supposedly being adopted out of state.
