Robin-

LUNA stands for either Laser Uterosacral Nerve Ablation or Laparoscopic Uterosacral Nerve Ablation. Both involve burning, then cutting, the uterosacral ligaments as they insert into the bottom of the uterus. These ligaments support the bottom of the uterus, by attaching the uterus to the sacral area. They are thick bands of tissue about as big around as a #2 pencil (although they are smaller in postmenopausal women).

These ligaments contain nerves that may contribute to deep, central pelvic pain, particularly deep pain with intercourse. Some feel that period cramps may sometimes involve these ligaments. Although theoretically cutting these nerves will alleviate central pelvic pain, medical research has not consistently proven that this method works. Some studies show excellent results, whereas others do not. Still, as long as your doctor is a skilled laparoscopic surgeon, and watches the ureters (kidney tubes) while doing the procedure, it is considered quite safe. The nerves do not seem critical for any other function, so cutting them appears safe.
