Are CA125 tests necessary?

My mother (75 years old) passed away last week from (presumably) met adenocarcinoma of the endometrium. In June '96 she had a complete hysterectomy. At that time the lab results showed that the cancer was confined to the lining of the endometrium, and there was no cancer in the ovaries or in any of the lymph nodes removed for biopsy.

9 months later, a CA125 showd that her cancer had returned, in the form of tumors on the omentum. Her GYN/ONC said that her type of cancer was very rare and "a mean one." She said it was *acting* like ovarian cancer. The many different types of chemo that were tried didn't work for very long.

Mother said that her GYN/ONC suggested that my sister and I undergo a CA125 every six months to a year. I called the office this week and was told that this was really unnecessary, as Mother didn't have ovarian cancer (then why was the CA125 above 5,000?)and there are so many conditions that can give false positive CA125's.

So, what is the story on this type of cancer, anyway? Everyone I've talked to seems to have a different opinion. Is it possible that it is genetically linked? Mother's pap tests had shown hyperplasia for years. Should this have been a clue? What should my sister and I watch most carefully? And what about those CA125's? Should we?

Thanks so much.
