contemplating hysterectomy - panic and indecision

Have been advised to have a complete hysterectomy (total uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes)as soon as possible. All tests show neg. for cancer, but uterus is 16 wks. pregnancy size(I'm not pregnant) w/ at least 5 fibroids, largest 5 cm., one ovary 8 cm. (a cyst, apparently), and have had almost constant very heavy bleeding and anemia for past year. Am 45 w/ family history of breast cancer, personal history of multiple fibroadenomas, so am reluctant to launch menopause 10 yrs. prematurely (women in my family menstruate up to age 55+) and doom myself to taking artificial substitutes for my own hormones. Have taken Alesse (b.c. pill) and Provera to stop bleeding, w/o success. Hormones I've taken in the past have caused depression and emotional imbalances (e.g. I suddenly weep over the price of carrots in the supermarket, at dumb movies, etc.), whereas normally I'm unflappable. I'm also strong physically, and need to snap back after the operation. I need to pour concrete and build a garage this summer! So.. Q. Do I have to have it all out or else bleed to death on the installment plan? Would it help anything to leave one ovary in? I've heard so many bad things from women over the years (sexual dysfunction, urinary problems, pain), but all hints, allusions and generalities. What risks do I actually run? How fast and how thoroughly will I recover? How big will the scar be and will my abdominal muscles heal totally?
