Breech and External Version QsFrom: anonymous@obgyn.netThu, 25 Jun 1998 13:51:42 EDT
I've just been scheduled for an external version to take place one week from today (which will be 36w6d). This baby is stubbornly breech. Since my care is at a teaching institution, the docs are pushing the idea of a vaginal breech delivery if the version is not successful although I'm not so excited about the idea. They've quoted a 50-60% success rate for the version. This has been a high risk pregnancy, also known as pregnancy #6. I had one live birth 6.5 years ago when I was 31...now 38. I'm on asa/heparin for APA, DES daughter/have been on strict bedrest since 21 weeks for a "trick cervix" which shortens and effaces very early. Also it is an IVF/ICSI pregnancy. Also am GBS+. Prior live birth was a 6 lb, 5 oz baby at 39 weeks. At a growth scan at 35w3d, this baby already had an estimated weight of 6lbs according to the perinatologists. I started this pregnancy at 110 and am now 135. (I gained a few more lbs in the prior term pregnancy). Complicating my thoughts are the memories of 3 hours of pushing for a not-so- large baby --I also remember the OB saying "that's about as big a baby as you can do." If this baby turns, I still anticipate a challenging period of pushing due to the increased size. I kind of like my abdominal muscles and don't relish the thought of having them cut. But I think a breech delivery is more terrifying...I don't know anyone who's had one, I've never seen one, and I can only imagine the complications. I'd love opinions from the docs (on how to make this decision)--or pointers to web sites that have more info on external version and breech deliveries. Thanks!
