Cervical cancer in pregnancyFrom: AMD (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 22 Jun 1998 16:31:19 -0500 (CDT)
A member of my family is pregnant and due in November. At her first pre-natal checkup, her pap smear indicated that she had Class 4 cervical cancer. What does this mean? She is scheduled for some additional tests in a week or two. What tests are recommended in this situation? What are her treatment options? I think her doctor is hoping to get her and the baby to 7 months before delivery. They live near Wichita, KS -- are there hospitals in that area that can properly care for such a premature baby? She is currently seeing a GP to care for her during her pregnancy. Is this wise given her situation? I think she is reluctant to see a specialist because she and her husband are afraid they would be advised to terminate the pregnancy. Is this a realistic concern? Should a pregnancy be terminated due to cervical cancer? It is particularly frightening that she had a normal pap smear less than 6 months ago. How could this have progressed so far so fast? Does cervical cancer normally progress this quickly? The whole family is very concerned about the situation and afraid that the couple does not understand how serious this can be. Are we over-reacting? Sorry this is so long, but we are very concerned about her, her baby, and her 3 y.o. daughter. Andrea
