high AFP test in pregnancyFrom: Alicia (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 18 Jun 1998 12:07:01 -0500 (CDT)
My AFP test came back extremely high and I was told that my baby has a 1 in 5 chance of having spina bifida. I've had two level 2 ultrasounds since receiving this result and both of them were perfectly normal. I chose not to have an amniocentesis due to the small risk of miscarriage. I was 24 weeks pregnant when I had the last ultrasound and my doctor seems to think that something should have been detected on ultrasound by then. I was wondering if someone could tell me how accurate ultrasounds are in diagnosing spina bifida or neural tube defects. My doctor seems optimistic that the baby is fine but I'm still very worried.
