Laura- While miscarriages are unfortunately very common, miscarriages in the second trimester (ie 14 weeks), are not. It is possible that both miscarriages were from chromosomal problems, since about 80% of all miscarriages stem from this type of "bad luck" problem. However, other things can cause second-trimester miscarriages. I always offer an evaluation for a patient who has had a second trimester loss (or multiple first trimester losses). These problems might include abnormalities of the uterus, certain blood disorders (like antibody problems), lupus, and rare chromosomal problems with either parent. Good luck with your evaluation and your next pregnancy.
