Question for Dr. Shanahan or Dr. BradleyFrom: anonymous@obgyn.netFri, 12 Jun 1998 14:22:07 -0500 (CDT)
My brothers wife is 45 and scheduled for a hysterectomy for fibroids. She has to decide whether to keep her ovaries or have them taken out. There is a lot of heart disease in her family but no ovarian cancer. She hasn't begun to experience any symptoms of menopause yet. Her grandmother, mother and two older sisters began to experience menopausal symptoms in their early-to-mid 50's, so Rebecca thinks she may go through menopause at about the same age the other women in her family did. Conceivably, she has another five or so years left of her own estrogen production, and then, of course, she will begin ERT when she does begin to experience menopausel symptoms. Given her family history (lots of heart disease, no family history of ovarian cancer or personal risk factors for ovarian cancer), would she be better off taking out her ovaries or keeping them? What advice can you give her? Her surgery is coming up soon, so she has to make a decision before next week. Thanks for your advice.
