Re: Progesterone & TestosteroneFrom: anonymous@obgyn.netWed, 03 Jun 1998 13:22:20 -0500
JCH, Have you ever read the book called What Your Doctor May or Maynot Tell You about Menopause, by Dr. John Lee M.D. It will answer alot of your questions about the Natural Progesterone. I have included some information for you. If you would like more email me at Itchybau@swbell.net I have a free bi-weekly newsletter called Hotflash News if you are interested in receiving let me know. I was one of the lucky ones who had a OBGYN who would listen to me and my concerns to try a natural apporach. It has worked wonders for me! This is mainly in reference to the kind that I use. "Hotflash" News Here are a few Questions that have been presented in our Hotflash group. The first newsletters are about natural progesterone because of all the questions we have been recieveing on this subject. Hopefully you will find them informative: Q: Have you read Dr. Preston Book on HOW TO BALANCE YOU HORMONES AND BE A HAPPY HEALTHY WOMEN? It is available to read at http://members.aol.com/kehealth/index or you can call me and I will mail you a hard copy. Q: What other books are available on the market that talk about natural progesterone? What Your Dr. May or May Not Tell You About Menopause, By Dr. John Lee, M.D. is a very informative book on natural progesterone. The latest version will be out in the book stores in May of 98. Also new books come out all the time on the subject of hormones with the pros and cons on natural progesterone. Dr. Lee as well as Dr. Preston have been using on patients for years with great success. Q: Is this newsletter just for women going throught menopause? A: This Newsletter is for all ages and not just menopause, we feel that it is needed to keep everyone updated on the lastest news on different subjects. The first few news letters will be about natural progesterone, since we have had a lot of questions sent to us on this subject. Q: How long should I stay on progesterone supplementation? According to both Dr. Lee and Dr. Preston, Since progesterone has so many positive benefits and no know side effects , there is no reason to discontinue it. Dr. Lee tell his women patients that they should continue until age 96 and then he will revaluate! Q: How so I know how much Progesterone to use? Both Dr. Lee & Dr. Preston feel that you should use a cream that uses at least 400 mg per ounce. Q: Shouldn't I be taking estrogen for my heart? This is according to Dr. Lee, Despite the advertising, the cardiovascular protection benefit of estrogen supplementation is still questionable Estrogen does appear to lower total cholesterol and raise HDL cholesterol modestly. But it is not clear that this reduces the risk of heart mortality, as reported in a report titled "Serum Total Cholesterol and Long-Term Coronary Heart Disease Mortality in Different Cultures" by W.N. Monique Vershuren, and published in JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association. The authors concluded that other factors, such as diet and antioxidants, are probably more important in heart disease prevention. The increased risk of heart disease after menopause may be the result of progesterone deficiency rather than estrogen deficiency. Heart disease risk is highly variable when different cultures are examined, yet all women experience menopause. Over the past 15 years, I have struck by the fact that my patients on progesterone supplementation and without estrogen supplements have been remarkably free of heart disease. Clearly there are other factors involved. The role of estrogen per se is still questionable. (It is up to the woman reading the information made available to which way she might go.) Q: Who should use estrogen supplements? Dr. Lee states that Estrogen works well for hot flashes and vaginal dryness. These symptoms can be taken as a sign of estrogen deficiency. However, because progesterone is a biochemical percursor to estrogen, it alone is often sufficient to restore estrogen levels to normal and eliminate these symptoms. If a three month trial of progesterone plus proper diet and supplements of magnesium and B-6 do not relieve hot flashes or vaginal dryness, then low-dose estrogen may be helpful. (Estrogen is not recommended in those women with a history of breast or uterine cancer, obesity, diabetes, or a history of clotting or vascular disorder.) If used for hot flashes, find the lowest dose of estrogen that works. If vaginal dryness is the problem, I usually recommend vaginal gels or creams containing estrone or estriol. Often a small dose applied in the vagina only twice a week, three weeks a month, will do wonders. Otherwise, I'm not sure of any reason to use estrogen. Q: What would happen If I Suddenly Stop Estrogen? According to both Doctors, the most common side effects would be both vaginal dryness and hot flashes. Q: What Progesterone cream should I use? According to both Doctors they suggest you use a cream that contains at least 400 mgs. of progesterone pe once. There is now a number of creams on the market that contain less than 10 mgs. per ounce, and in their opinion these are unlikely to be effective. Vitality-Lifechoice, has a cream called Feminine Balance which will be in the back of Dr. Lee's new edition coming out in May of 98 on What Your Dr. May or Maynot Tell You About Menopause. It will be listed under the creams that contain over 400 mgs. of Natural Progesterone. You may also call Aerons Lab, an Independent Lab for their test results. Both Drs. also suggest that you use his Magnesium and Vitamin B-6 supplements. Which Vitality-Lifechoice Corp. has a combination product called Ultra Pro B-6. Q: Why do I need to take the Ultra Pro B-6 capsules in conjunction with the cream? According to Dr. Preston for three reasons! First, they contain vitamin B-6 and magnesium which are essential in order for your body to manufacture professorate. A woman low in her own production of professorate is revealing that she is low in these two nutrients. Second, professorate can only be put to work by a large family of enzymes. All these enzymes require magnesium and vitamin B-6 as co factors in order to activate the progesterone. Third, in order to maintain calcium in the bones and keep them strong, both vitamin B-6 and magnesium are required. The Ultra B-6 contains just the right amount and ratio of vitamin B-6 and magnesium. and the right forms to produce maximum benefits from progesterone. Q: I have severe Mood Swings, Anxiety, Cramping, Cravings etc. will this program help me? We can't say for sure that it you help you personally, however, we can say that it has helped many, many women with the same kind of problems. The program does come with a 90 day money back guarantee, so get the program and try it for 90 days and if you don't feel it works for you the company will be glad to refund your money. Q: I'm on prescription drugs, does the Balance Program have any drug interactions? All the authorities on natural progesterone state that it is not only safe and non-toxic, it also is not known to have any interactions with any drugs, prescription or over the counter. Q: I'm a 68 year old woman who has already gone thru menopause a few years ago, but now the doctor told me I'm starting to develope osteoporosis, will Natural Progesterone help me? The research of Dr. John Lee M.D. with a number of women in menopause who had begun experiencing bone loss due to osteoporosis, demonstrated that as they faithfully used natural progesterone cream, they not only stopped bone loss, but reversed it, actually building new bone. One of the other benefits many menopause women have reported is the loss of brown spots as a result of rubbing the cream on their hands, arms, face and neck. They also reported less wrinkles and more moist, soft supple skin. Q: Can Menopause start as early as the midthirties? A: Women may begin to have signs of menopause as early as their mid thirties, in the form of anovulatory cycles that begin to create estrogen dominance and all its myriad symptoms, such as weight gain, fatigue, depression, mood swings, fluid retention, unstable blood sugar, low thyroid symptoms, fibrocystic breasts, and uterine fibroids. Although menstrual periods will continue even when there is no ovulation, they may be farther apart, or heavier, or lighter. Adrenal insufficiency caused by a stressful lifestyle may exacerbate symptoms of estrogen dominance. Since a woman must ovulate to become pregnant at this age. He suspects a lot of CFS is really hormonal mayhem caused by a combination of estrogen dominance and adrenal insufficiency. If you get tested by your doctor and see your hormones are off balance, take a look at your life style, eating habits, exercise, and stress in your daily life. You must correct this part of your life for any program to work. Q: Why does Ultra B-6 have both Magnesium and B-6 combined? A: Magnesium, which can't be utilized without Vitamin B-6, also serves as the primary source of strength in the bones and teeth. Most people think of calcium for bones and teeth, but calcium only provides bulk. Magnesium can't be effectively used without vitamin B-6 and vitamin B-6 cannot be used effectively used without Magnesium. (source- Product Overview and Physician's Guide by Robert Preston, N.D. 1996) Q: What are some of the reasons why Magnesium and B-6 are used in combination to help with good health? A: There are 29 problems where science has found these two nutrients often play the main role in recovery. A few are Asthma, Caffeine Intolerance, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, High Blood Pressure, Menstrual Cramps and pain, Osteoporosis, PMS, and the list goes on... (source- Product Overview and Physicians Guide by Dr. Robert Preston, N.D. 1996) Q: Why is the Ultra Pro B-6 included in the Feminine Balance Program? Also is B-6 a good source to help depression? A: If one takes hormones for a yr. or more, you may need vit. B-6 supplements. Estrogen quickly uses up this vitamin! When one is low on B-6, depression can occur. If this is the case, depression may be helped with the right amt. of B-6. (source- Revised edition Menopause - A guide for Women and The Men That Love Them. 1992 Pg. 130) Q: Why do we need progesterone when we feel we are having PMS? A: PMS occurs during the time of the cycle when progesterone levels are supposed to be high, but many women who suffer from PMS have lower than normal progesterone levels. That's why they give progesterone supplements during the second half of the menstrual cycle to boost levels to normal. The author states that progesterone does not cure all cases of PMS, it has been used successfully to treat many. (source - The super-Hormone Promise by William Regel, MD. and Carol Colman, 1997) Q: What can Natural Progesterone do for my PMS symptoms? A: The list below is from the booklet online at http://members.aol.com/kehealth/index called How To Balance Your Hormones and Be a Happy Healthy Woman! by Dr. Robert Preston N.D. PREMENSTRUAL SYNDROME SYMPTOMS BENEFITED BY NATURAL PROGESTERONE The following was researched and reported by Dr.Raymond F. Peat in his books, "Progesterone in Orthomolecular Medicine" and "Nutrition for Women". This list has also been confirmed by many physicians. Accident Tendency Aggression and Violent Behavior Arthritis Flare Up Asthma Attempted Suicides Backache Bloating Blurring Vision Boils Breast Engorgement Breast Tenderness Bronchitis Bruising Easily Capillary Fragility Child Abuse: Physical & Verbal Cold Extremities Constipation & Gas Crying Spells Dark Circles Under Eyes Depression Drug Abuse Dry Hair Epilepsy Attacks Excess Alcohol Use Exhaustion: Physical or Mental Eye Irritation & Puffiness Facial Pallor Fainting Spells Falling Hair Feelings of Being Crazy Feelings of Panic Fibroids of Breast or Uterus Flu & Colds Frequently Frequent Urination Frustration Gall Bladder Problems Greasy Hair Headache Herpes Simplex Type I Hoarseness Hypoglycemic Episodes Hysteria Infertility Inflammatory Conditions Insomnia Irritability Joint Pain Joint Swelling Lack of Concentration Lack of Libido Lethargy Loss of Appetite Migraines Motor Coordination Reduced Mood Swings Muscle Pain Nervousness Poor Dream Recall Runny Eyes Runny Nose Self-Inflicted Injuries Sinusitis Skin Dryness Slow Digestion Spontaneous Abortion Sore Throat Sudden Bursts of Anger Toxemia of Pregnancy Water Retention White Spots In Fingernails Q:If a woman has breast cancer that has progesterone positive receptors, is it safe to take progesterone? A: As for the question concerning: "What course of action is indicated when there are progesterone receptors in female tissues where cancer has been found." The first thing we must realize is that it is absolutely normal and healthy for female tissues to have progesterone receptors. Secondly we need to realize that the reason those receptors are there is to act as a counterbalance to the estrogen receptors. In other words, female tissues normally take up both hormones, which is why the receptors are there in the first place. The presence of the receptors has nothing to do with what causes the cancer to occur. Only one of those hormones is carcinogenic- Estrogen-but only when in excessive amounts - or- when it is not counterbalanced by enough progesterone. The progesterone receptor is there to facilitate the uptake of the calming and protective progesterone in order to prevent the estrogen from becoming carcinogenic. Remember: In the study that was done at John Hopkins University School of Medicine, following women for a 20 yr. period, it was found that women who had normal to high levels of natural progesterone in their blood and tissues, had a 400% LOWER rate of cancer in the female tissues and a 1000% LOWER rate of cancer from all other forms of cancer. Bottom line: Progesterone is protective against cancer caused by excess estrogen. The progesterone receptors are a part of the body's own natural protective mechanism to increase the uptake of progesterone in order to PREVENT or CORRECT the development of cancer in those tissues. Since this is the case, the supplemental use of transdermal progesterone cream offers the body the opportunity to provide those receptor sites with progesterone which they can then take into those tissues in order to provide a higher level of protection from the development of cancer than would be possible with lower tissue levels of progesterone. I hope this is helpful to everyone's understanding. Dr. Robert Preston N.D. Q: Can Feminine Balance Program help if I have Endometriosis? A: This section was taken from an article called EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW TO MAXIMIZE YOUR SUCCESS IN CONCEIVING A CHILD WITH NATURAL METHODS By Dr. Robert Preston N. D. (From the International Institution of Nutritional Research.) Endometroiosis One of the problems which makes it difficult for women to conceive is the development of endometriosis. This is a condition now thought by many authorities to be brought on by a lack of sufficient magnesium and vitamin B-6 combined with stress. Under these circumstances the uterus is unable to fully dilate the opening (known as the "os" or mouth) of the uterus through which the menstrual discharge flows. These women are generally characterized by very painful uterine cramps during their menstrual period. They desperately need the "Mag-Six" (Ultra Pro B-6) formula. As an emergency measure just 4 capsules taken at the time of severe cramps will bring total relief within 20 minutes by allowing the uterus to dilate properly. Without the uterus fully dilating, not enough of the shedding inner lining (endometria) is able to leave the uterus throught the mouth of the uterus and some of it begins to escape via the fallopian tubes at the upper end of the uterus. Since some of these endometrial cells will become lodged in these tubes, and they are still alive, if there is too little, or no progesterone produced, these endometrial cells will begin to grow in these tubes. Since these tubes are the passageway by which the woman's egg will descend into the uterus for fertilization, if the tubes become blocked by endometrial cells, the egg can not decend, and conception cannot take place. The regular use of the Mag-Six (Ultra Pro B-6) formula throughout the entire mouth, and the use of the Feminine Balance Cream as directed here, will in the greatiest majority of cases, end all abnormal menstrual cycles within 3 or 4 months and prevent the developement of endomentriosis.
