Estrogen and MigrainesFrom: Jean (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sun, 31 May 1998 21:23:13 -0500 (CDT)
I am 37yrs old. I had a complete hysterectomy 5 years ago and have been on Premarin since. I am now down to the .9 dose. For the past 3 years I've been having migraines; I've had headaches for most of my life but they have definitely worsened in the past 3 years. My family doctor thinks that it may be due to the estrogen I'm taking. Can this be possible since I've been taking Premarin for 5 yrs but the headaches have worsened in the past 3, and more so in the last year. My family doctor wanted me to take Evista. However, my ob-gyn told me to stay off the Premarin for 30 days and then follow up with him. At that time, he'll see if I need a lower dose of estrogen, or he'd have me switch to another form of estrogen, rather than take Evista. I would just like another opinion regarding this plan of action. (1) Can my headaches be caused by the estrogen I am taking? (2) Does it make sense to lower the dosage of the drug that I am on, or switch to another form? (3) Is the patch better than the pill form? (4) Also, Estrace was mentioned as an alternative? (5) What is know about Evista? I know it would cause me to have hot flashes, but I'd prefer them over a migraine any day. Thanks for your help!
