Premature Ovarian Failure, High FSH, HRTFrom: Ellen (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 29 May 1998 17:06:01 +0000
I've just been diagnosed with Premature Ovarian Failure, and have been told by the doctor who diagnosed it that taking two to three months of HRT will likely reverse the ovarian failure. However, after researching the topic, I can find no references that ovarian function can be restored. Is this true? I'm also a little confused by the diagnosis. I'm 40 and have been thinking I was starting in with perimenopause -- hot flashes, insomnia, heart palpitations, etc. (I thought I was just beginning the process, though!) Just three months ago, I had an FSH level of 13 (day 12). Now I suddenly have an FSH level in the post-menopausal range. Is this sudden change normal? My body has certainly let me know it was going through some significant changes. But what exactly is the difference between POF and early menopause? Am I POF only because of the dramatic FSH change? (I know the cut-off for POF is usually 39.) Or is this diagnosis even correct? My doctor has not been forthcoming with information, and I'm especially concerned about his theory that I will regain ovarian function with three months of HRT. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Ellen __________________ Ellen T. Johnson -- __________________ Houston, TX USA
