The "mindset",thankfully has changed!!A pap smear is to detect early premalignant changes that allow treatment--has decreased cervix cancer rates in US by 70% in last 30 years!!Usually only detects cells from cervix;rarely can show abnormal cells from uterine lining and more rarely ovaries and tubes.Cervival cancer is absolutely not hereditary--probably a form of an STD related to the human papiloma virus.Assuming you have normal periods,a normal pelvic exam, and Pap smear regularly---no need to worry. >
