Is this a real period??

I heard once that it is possible to have a "real" period when you are actually pregnant. How is this so? What are the deciding factors to determine if a period is nothing to worry about or not?

I'm on the pill (5 months) and don't want to be breaking the bank on HPTs or doctor visits as long as I'm having pill periods. I take them regualrly, and had my pill period on time last week. Paranonoa set in a bit after I heard this, and I've been wondering if my period was a true one--it was the same flow, normal for me on the pill. Since most women I know (me included) have some pg-like side effects on the medication, how in the world would a woman tell if she was pg or not on the pill (besides a test--when should she be prompted to see an MD)?
