I too am a first time mom. My little boy is 4 months old and has been breastfeeding exclusively since he was a few minutes old (although we just started a little rice cereal). Since I went back to work when my son was 7 weeks old I rented a Medela electric double pump from a lactation consultant ($30 a month) and recently returned it since I never used it. I work at a hospital and so I ended up using the one in the obstetrics department which is much better-made in the 60's for hospitals. I found it difficult to pump at first but once the milk was established it became much easier. Now I can pump 7-8 ounces in 10 minutes. I freeze my milk in storage bags since I don't know if it will be used within 24 hours. I would definitely suggest a double pump and the Medela set up comes apart to be used as a hand pump which was useful for expressing 2-3 ounces to be mixed with cereal or when you couldn't nurse (I went skiing when my son was 4 weeks old-my first time away from him and was sure glad I had the hand pump on the way home). Anyway, good luck and I hope you continue to breast feed even after you return to work.
