Birth Control/Spermicide AllergyFrom: Beth (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 26 May 1998 16:26:13 -0500 (CDT)
I have been on the pill now for 12 years. While my doctor says there is no cause to worry, the length of time I've been taking them concerns me. I'd like to switch methods but I am not sure to what. Years ago, my husband had two very painful episodes while using condoms with spermicide. He suffered severe burning and pain and has since decided he must be allergic to spermicide. Coincidently, he began to sense an irritation one night while using massage oil that, when reading the ingredients, we learned contained nonoxyl-9. I would like to switch to a diaphragm, but he of course does not want to risk another spermicide experience. Are allergies to this common? Are there any alternatives. After years of marriage, I am very reluctant to go back to using condoms. Am I being over concerned about my length of time on the pill?
