My doctor advised going 3-6 mos without, and that was fine with me. My "surgical menopause" has been a breeze. I have very few "hot flashes", sleep well, no night sweats, etc. I almost feel apologetic for not having all the awful things happen that I expected. The negatives are: vag dryness (use lubricants), PMS symtoms (use St Johns Wort and this seems to really help, so they are not a problem for me now); sexually, I feel great; I know this is personal - but my orgasms aren't as intense as they were before, but they're still there, God bless 'em, so no problem. I am hesitating to begin HRT because I do feel so good - I know that HRT is the best prevention for osteo and prevention of heart attacks, but I feel so good that I don't want to go there yet. I also take Calcium plus Vitamin D daily, try to have a good balanced diet, and I exercise at least 4x a week (power circuit aerobics, light weights, walking or bike - I mix 'em up). I have also been introducing more soy products into my diet. There is no history of osteoporosis in my family, so I have that on my side. Coronary problems are another thing - HOWEVER, my parents were both moderately overweight, did not exercise and smoked, so I think that must factor in there somewhere. I know that I am doing all I can to stay healthy and I do feel very fortunate to be going through the "pause" so well. Anyway - this is my own experience, so I thought I would pass it along. I can't answer the other questions you have, but I too am interested in the answers to your other questions (I too wonder how my regime measures up in the fight against osteoporosis). I am sure someone else on this fine forum will offer you more info. All the best, Jean
