Re: Are Episiotomies necesary in First Births? From: Lisa (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 30 Apr 1998 14:08:10 -0500 (CDT)
I have to say no they are not, as I just deliverred my first baby without any tearing and no episiotomy. I did Kegels during my pregnancy, not as often as they recommended but as often as I thought about it, maybe a couple of times a day. Also, during the pushing phase I built up to it slowly, and though it took a bit longer to push the baby out, I believe it helped stretch the area enough. I think the doctor has a lot to do with it as well. Mine kept helping stretch the area very gently with each contraction and push, so gently I never felt a thing, and I didn't have any epidural or pain medication. I think a lot of the 'agony' of childbirth is in your head! I said all along I would have a short painfree labour, and that's exactly what I had. Four hours, no drugs, no cuts, no tears. Good luck!
