Re: Pros and Cons of Walking Epidurals?From: Elizabeth (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 30 Apr 1998 07:22:33 -0700
Carrie, HOORAY for you! I am so happy to see you interested and taking the time to understand all of your options. A walking epidural is different than a regular epidural in the fact that it can be given earlier in labor. I guess the pros & cons would be: - a woman MAY be able to get anesthetic relief and still be able to walk and be mobile. - it only lasts about 45min - 1hr. This may be good and get you through a rough spot but it can be not so good if you are not looking forward to a regular epidural and another injection into the spine. - As with any other intervention, baby and you will need to be monitored more closely and this may lead to other interventions. It is an individual choice as to use this or not. It is most important that you learn and understand risks and benefits to ALL of your options and that way you can mke choices that are best for you. A good childbirth series can help and so can a doula (labor support). Also, goo communication with your provider is a must. Write a birth plan. Read, read, read. A Good Birth A Safe Birth is an excellent book. Congratulations on your pregnancy! Feel free to email me with any other questions! Hope this helps you! --- Best Wishes, Elizabeth Mazelis,CCE Washington,NJ -------------------------------------- >In my search to be more educated on the one event in my life that will -------------------------------------- >have the biggest impact, I have many questions.
