I'll tell you why. With my last child the afp test came back abnormally low. My ultrasound was fine but the doctor told me it could indicate very serious complications. She also told me that most couples would decide now whether or not to continue with the pregnancy. My only other option was amniocentisis, which is quite painful and may cause premature labor in and of itself. Plus, I would have to wait two weeks for the results. In the state in which I live it would not be possible to end the pregnancy at that time, however, I still wanted to know. So we had the amnio. done and waited our two exhausting weeks. The test results came back and could tell us nothing. They did not find enough cells to do the test. We spent the rest of the pregnancy in agonizing suspence to deliver a beautiful normal perfect boy.
