Fibroid tumers & treatmentsFrom: Annette (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 13 Apr 1998 10:31:50 -0500 (CDT)
I am 45 and had 5 children when I was between the ages of 20 - 27. About the time of my 2nd pregnancy my OB indicated that I had fibroid tumors. Since that time, due to a high turnover rate of OB-GYN in this area, I have seen about 4 or 5 other doctors that also indicated fibroid tumors. I have had very painful and profuse mensus with clotting and serious cramping all my life. Several years after my last child was born I underwent a laparoscopy to determine the cause of increased pelvic pain, swelling of my abdoman and 7-9 day periods with even heavier bleeding and clotting, and perhaps only a week (-,+) between periods. A pocket of fluid (app. 1/2 cup) was found and drained but no explanation was given as to the possible source. I have continued to have difficult and irregular periods, although with less severe bleeding and clotting as I am approaching menopause. I have just changed to a new GYN again, this time of my own choice because of my concerns over the treatment of my last doctor. When I first saw her, she indicated that she detected fibroid tumors that may need medical attention at some time. About 1 year later my GP diagnosed hypothyroidism and my periods had again become problematic . I was anemic and lithargic and bleeding quite heavily for several weeks when my GYN put me on birth controll pills to regulate my bleeding. This was successfully accomplished within a few months and all other difficulties that I experienced as a result of the hypothyroidism were eliminated by the synthroid that my GP had prescribed. At this time I felt that I should be removed from the birth control pills because of the fibroid tumors but my GYN indicated that I must remain on them until I reached menopause. (Her attitude had become generally unsympathetic as witnessed by my husband on the occasion that he brought me to her because of his and family members' concern with anemia and dehydration). I stopped taking the birth control pills and sought to find another GYN that friends and family recommended. I just saw her a few weeks ago for a PAP and initial exam. The test and the exam were rather painful, and I informed her that I had been spotting between periods and after intercourse and am feeling a sense of heaviness in my pelvis and lower back pain. She asked me if any previous doctors had indicated fibroid tumors and ordered blood workup and a repeat visit with her next month. NOW, finally, my questions: 1) Could the fluid that was drained from my belly several years ago have any connection with these tumors? 2) Could the birth control pills have stimulated the tumors? 3) What is my best plan of action considering my age and the degree of discomfort that I am experiencing? Thank you for bearing with me through my boring medical history and the time that you take out of your busy lives to answer my questions and those of concerned women all over the country...God bless you!
