Prolactin and ovarian cystsFrom: Cash (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 30 Mar 1998 15:10:00 -0600
Last year I was diagnosed with a high prolactin level without being pregnant. A blood test was taken because my breast became and remained swollen and very tender throughout several menstrual cycles. Concurrently, I was also diagnosed with an ovarian cyst which caused some pain and discomfort. After taking Parlodel for six months, the prolactin level dropped to normal, and two months of oral contraceptives took care of the ovarian cyst. I am now having indications that the prolactin level has again increased (same symptoms as above). Do ovarian cysts have anything to do with an elevated prolactin level or vice-versa? Just wondering, since the pelvic pain and discomfort seem also to be increasing. I am scheduled for a diagnostic laparoscopy and hysteroscopy on April 3 (numerous tests have already been completed to rule out problems in other organs/areas) since I've been having pain and problems for over a year and a half. Should my doctor/ surgeon also look for any recurring ovarian cysts? RC
