Gauze Left Internally After Perineal RepairFrom: Brian (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 23 Mar 1998 14:16:35 -0600 (CST)
My wife recently delivered a rather large baby resulting in a 3rd degree tear. Before repairing the tear, the physician used gauze to clean up some of the bleeding. But, he neglected to remove the gauze. So, my wife had gauze left within her for over 2 weeks. The discomfort was tremendous. When we noticed the gauze beginning to protrude from the vagina, we went to the physician's office and they immediately removed it. While we understand my wife was in considerable danger as long as the gauze remained within her, I wonder now what the residual risks are and if we ought to take any further action???
