I've heard high protein Unfortunately, we do not know of any method of preventing preeclampsia. We used to think that calcium pills would prevent preeclampsia, but a few recent, large studies do not support this theory. Bedrest when the BP elevates may prolong the pregnancy, and should increase placental blood flow, but does not cure the disease. In some cases early preeclampsia may be due to rare antibodies in the blood stream, called antiphospholipid antibodies. These are also associated with fetal growth restriction and other complications, so we sometimes check for these (via a tube of blood). It may also be wise to check the kidneys and liver with a blood test, but these are only very rarely abnormal. Simply put, most pregnant women with severe preeclampsia do not get it again, but when they do, there is nothing we currently know of that can prevent it (other than not getting pregnant). Good luck to you.
