Laura, the reason they can't keep doing leetz or cold knife cone's is because the more they "chip away" at your cervix the least likely you are to be able to carry children. This is not my issue, but I thought I'd put it in there. As it is I basically have no cervix because I told my doctor to take as much as possible during the cone in order to have it be currative, WHICH IT WAS. The reason the doctor is urging me to have the hysterectomy, is based on the 10% chance that dysplasia or the carco comes back. The pathologist reading the cone results agreed. Based on the fact that I don't wish to have any more children, my doctor can't understand why I want to keep my uterus. I want to keep it because I equate this part of my body with my youth and vitality. I equate this part of my body with my sexuality and sensuality, and sexual enjoyment. I'm afraid of how I'll feel when this part of my body is gone. I'm one of those "strange" women who embraces her period as part of my connection to the earth and the cycle of creation. It's difficult to accept the words from a conservative scientist/doctor that I don't "need" my uterus. I have radically changed my lifestyle and nutrition in the past 6 months, as well as addressed the emotional issues that I feel were attached to this disease. All this considered, I realize that should the carco come back to an area in my vaginal canal that makes it hard to detect, and I get invasive cancer, I could have NO material connection to the earth, cuz I'll be dead and I'll be leaving my children motherless. As well, I can't even imagine the anquish of what Barbara has experienced. Still, THIS is what I'M experiencing right now. These are the feelings accompanying my decision. That and the whole surgery and the effects of not having a uterus frankly..scares me. A fear I know I'll over come, once I've become comfortable with that decision. I'm just not there yet. I am fortunate to have the luxury of a little time. Barbara I am thankful for your response and I'm sure when you read my reasons for not wanting a hysterectomy you'd like to slap me! Unfortunatly, I'm not looking at my situation through your eyes of experience, I'm looking at from where I am now. That's all anyone can do. That's just honest. I do wonder what kind of cancer you had. And I'm curious to know why you had a hysterectomy 11 years ago. Your hysterectomy didn't save you from getting cancer, as my hysterectomy will not save me from the HPV virus which seems to be the culprit in the growth of the abnormal cells and lesions. There seems to be as much chance of me getting vaginal cancer (9%)( after my uterus is removed) as there is that my carcinoma in-situ will return (10%).And I probably will have warning that it's returning with the constant paps I'll be getting. BUT there's a 90% chance that the cone proceedure that I just had is curative. Bottom line is, when it comes to percentages if you're in the lower percentile, then you are.
I'm grateful, not angry that you've responded as you did. It's good to
get slapped in the face from someone whose been through what you have.
We all make choices based on the information we can gather. The more
information and HONESTY that we can gather, the better our choices will
be.I'm still gathering. And when I make my decision about my course of
action, I'll be informed and perhaps less surprised or regretful about
the repercussions of either choice. I absolutley appreciate where
you're coming from Barbara, I'm just trying to make some informed
choices while I still have them. Thank you for your heartfelt reply. I
wish you all the best in the future. And good luck to you too Laura,
thank you for responding.
