BCP and amoxicillinFrom: AMD (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 13 Mar 1998 11:34:47 -0600 (CST)
My FP prescribed amoxicillin 500 mg tid x 10 days for strep throat. Neither the FP or the pharmacist said anything about potential interaction with BCP's and I felt too lousy to think to ask. Is the notion that antibiotics can reduce the effectiveness of BCP's now considered an "old wives' tale"? I will finish the abx at the same time as I finish my first week of pills. Do I need additional protection? If so, for how long? Are there any documented cases of pill failure due to amoxicillin? Have any of the doctors in this forum actually seen it in their practice? Also, do doctors no longer culture for strep? When I was a kid, they always did a culture. As an adult, I have had several occasions where the dr presumed strep w/o a culture. I've actually only had one dr who did a culture. Is there now a way to detect strep w/o a culture? Why don't docs do throat cultures anymore? Thanks Andrea
