What are the guidlines for stopping premature labor? Lost first child to premature labor and docs say they won't stop it if it happens again. From: Susan (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 11 Mar 1998 15:15:05 -0600 (CST)
I miscarried my first child at 18 weeks due to premature labor. I am now pregnant again after a second miscarriage at 4 weeks. My doctors were kind enough to put me in high risk OB so they could monitor me more often, but my biggest problem has yet to be solved...what if I go into premature labor again? My doctor has told me they they do not stop labor when a woman is less than 24 weeks pregnant. She says they assume that something is wrong with the fetus or there is some type of infection so why bother. I say if it happens more than once to a person, isn't it more likely that there is a problem with the mothers ability to carry rather than the fetus? With my first pregnancy they found nothing wrong with the fetus and also found NO infection. Since I found out that they won't stop the labor, I have discussed this with many people. It seems like everyone that I spoken with either has, or knows someone who has gone into premature labor prior to 20 weeks and has been put on medication and bed rest and has gone on to deliver a healthy child. I can't imagine that my doctors are not educated in these methods. I'm trying to put enough information together so that I can argue my case to my doctors if, G-d forbid, I go into premature labor again. I would appreciate any info that you could give me. Keep in mind that I am active duty military, and the places I can get care are very limited. It is highly unlikely that I can change doctors. Thank you very much for your time.
