Autoimmune thyroiditis and miscarriageFrom: Liz (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sun, 8 Mar 1998 22:42:16 -0600 (CST)
I have two questions concerning the affect between autoimmune thyroiditis and the incidence of miscarriage. 1) From what I understand, there is an increased incidence of having NK (killer) cells which can attack the placenta and the fetus in people who also have antithyroid antibodies. Any idea what percentage of people with increased antibodies would have these killer cells? I have had 2 miscarriages in the past year. My TSH was 43 and my antithyroid antibodies were 99 right after the first one. 2) How common is it to have sudden onset of "wierd cycles" after regulation for hypothyroidism is instituted? During this summer, my thyroid levels went from low to high to normal to low to norma1. During that period of time, my cycles were normal as they had been even when the thyroid had not been treated. In September, I had crampy prementrual feelings right after ovulation. Two weeks later, when a period was due, I had every indication physically of ovulation again, along with 3 days (normal being6-7) of light bleeding. Ten days later, there were 5 days of spotting which progressed into 6 more days of what seemed to be a normal period (occuring when on my normal schedule I should have been ovulating). Two weeks later, I had a normal ovulatory phase and became pregnant. I lost the baby 11 weeks later---missed abortion. What is the likelyhood of this wierd pattern being a delayed reaction to the fluctuations of thyroid mid summer and could they, and the hormone imbalance they would reflect, be responsible for me not being able to carry that pregnancy? Thanks for any insights!
